CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ERHS SENIOR GOALIE
WHAT A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT AND HONOR!
The 10 finalists for the Mr. Hockey honor, given annually to the top senior skater in Minnesota, were announced Wednesday.
The 10 are: Duluth East defenseman Phil Beaulieu, Blaine forward Tyler Cline, Benilde-St. Margaret’s forward Spencer Naas, Edina defenseman Tyler Nanne, Grand Rapids forward Avery Peterson, Hill-Murray forward Mitch Slattery, Eden Prairie forward Steven Spinner, Eden Prairie defenseman Luc Snuggerud, Eagan defenseman Nick Wolff and Roseau forward Zach Yon.
Mac Berglove of Elk River and Hunter Shepard of Grand Rapids were announced as finalists for the Frank Brimsek Award, which goes to the state’s top senior goaltender.
The awards will be presented by the Minnesota Minute Men organization at the St. Paul RiverCentre on March 9, one day after the conclusion of the Class 2A and 1A state tournaments at the neighboring Xcel Energy Center.
Last year’s recipient among the skaters was forward Grant Besse of Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The top netminder honor went to David Zevnik of St. Thomas Academy.
Joel (C) played college hockey at Bemidji State where he was an All American as well as the NCHA player of the year '84. He played one season in the AHL prior to spending 14 seasons in the NHL and is a former member of the US National Team. In 1989 his Calgary Flames team won the Stanley Cup. Today he is an Assistant Coach for the Calgary Hitmen of the Canadian Hockey League.
Dan Hinote (F) played for Coach Sarsland, was All-Academic team three years in a row and earned Hockey Letters '93, '94, '95 (plus '93, '94 in Football), he scored the first Elk River State Tournament goal in '93, was Honorable Mention '94 and All-Conference '95. Dan was a member of the Jr Olympic Team winning a Silver Medal in '94 and played for Team Minnesota three times in his career. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council, his achievements earned him an appointment to US Military Academy West Point 1995. He became the first NHL player to be drafted out of West Point (by the Colorado Avalanche Organization in 1996). He played in the OHL for two seasons before turning pro with Colorado's AHL Hershey Bears where he was '99 MVP and played on the '99 All Star Team. He was called up to the NHL '99 and spent a total of 6 seasons in Colorado where he won a Stanley Cup in '01, 3 years with the St. Louis Blues, and two for Sweden MODO. Dan is the President & Founder of Hinotes Heroes; a non-profit organization that assists children with cancer, and their families (www.hinotesheroes.com). He is currently an Assistant Coach for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.

'00 was the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year & Mr. Hockey MN during his Senior year. He won NCAA D1 Titles for the MN Gophers in '02 & '03, was drafted by the New Jersey Devils, a member of the 2006 Team USA, & is currently a defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penquins.
Ben Gustafson graduated in 2002. He was part of the 2001 State Championship team and the 2002 Consolation Championship team at Elk River. Ben went on to play at Hamline University from 2002-2006. At Hamline Ben was Academic All Conference his Junior and Senior year and was team Captain his senior season. Ben is currently an assistant coach for the Elks and a PE Teacher @ Salk Middle School.
Tim Madsen (F) played for Coach Sarsland but left prior to Senior year to play USHL Juniors. His favorite memory of his time in ER was winning the State Tournament as a Sophomore. After two years in the USHL, he went on to play AHA D-I Hockey for Niagara University '08. Tim is in his fourth season as Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator for Niagara.
Former Elk Nate Prosser (D), coached by Tony Sarsland, appeared in the State Tournament as a Sophomore and was a two-time all-conference selection. Nate left high school early for an opportunity to play in the USHL for the Sioux Falls Stampede. He spent 3 years with the Stampede prior to playing Division I hockey for Colorado College. Nate signed his pro contract as a free agent during his Senior Year at Colorado. He made his NHL debut with the MN Wild on April 5, 2010. Nate spent one season with the AHL's Houston Aeros and is currently a defenseman (#39) for the MN Wild and a generous supporter of Elk Hockey. His father is Elks Assistant Coach Chris Prosser.
Recent Graduate News & Updates
Anders was the Elks Varsity Goalie for four years as well as a Captain Senior year. He won all 16 of the Elks' games this past season, stopping 92 percent of shots faced and allowing 2.16 goals per game. Allowed two or fewer goals 14 times this season and posted five shutouts. He was named to the Star Tribune All Metro 1st team 2012. Anders is currently playing with the Bismarck Bobcats.
Former Elk Ryan Heid (F), is attending North Dakota State University majoring in Engineering. He is playing on the NDSU Men's Lacrosse team #92, photos of Ryan are posted in the gallery.
Throughout his time in ER, Nick (D) was a consistent point leader and served as a Captain senior year. He was All Conference Honorable Mention and was invited to play in the Ted Brill Great 8, a tournament that showcases the states top seniors.
He is currently living in Minot, ND on the Airforce Base with his Billet Family, playing for the Minot Minotauros in the NAHL.
#21 Mitchell Wachtel (F) is a Freshman @ NDSU in Fargo, ND majoring in Computer Engineering and hoping to add a minor in Electrical Engineering as well. When not attending class or studying, he is working at NDSU's IT help desk where he assists other students with computer & technology challenges & requirements. Mitch does cut out some time daily to get over to the Wellness Center in order to work out. Dorm life is quite an adjustment from home but he loves the college experience and is looking forward to his future. Adam Watzke (F), played Varsity for two years, was the 2012 recipient of the Blue Line Club Jon McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship, addressed ERYHA annual S.K.A.T.E. banquet audience, and was named ISD#728 Triple-A Nominee recognizing seniors for excellence in arts, academics and athletics. He is currently a Freshman at UW-Stout majoring in Industrial Design.
